If you are not happy with the results of your first nose job, a revision rhinoplasty is an opportunity to achieve the results that you should have originally obtained. There are countless reasons why some nose jobs don't live up to the expectations of the patient. Whether it was miscommunication between the doctor and patient, or simply a inadequate procedure, a revision rhinoplasty with a doctor that you know and trust can change all of that and give you the nose you always wanted.
When considering a revisionist rhinoplasty in Florida it is important that you only consult with a board-certified surgeon. Dr. George Pope is a renowned board-certified plastic surgeon who you should consider for your surgery. He has more than 23 years of experience in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty in Florida, and he is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as well as numerous other prestigious boards.
Your revision rhinoplasty surgeon will most likely study your previous case, checking photos before your first rhinoplasty to detect the mistakes that were made. Be sure that you speak up in your consultation and cover all your bases. You will want to discuss all your expectations from the revision surgery so that the surgeon can choose the best strategy and methods for the procedure.
Recovery time from revision rhinoplasty is quite similar to that of primary rhinoplasty. During the first few hours following the surgery, you may need to breathe through your mouth due to the packing placed in the nose to stabilize it and limit any bleeding. The surgeon may also use a splint and/or bandages. Such things do cause some temporary discomfort. But the important thing to remember is that this is 'temporary' and the changes in the look of the nose outdo all the damages that were caused by the original nose job.
Painkillers will be prescribed by the surgeon to minimize the post-surgical pain. Self medication is not advisable even if was a minor rhinoplasty under local anesthesia. Taking over the counter medications such as Aspirin without the surgeon's advice can result in excessive bleeding and may lengthen the healing process. To keep swelling to a minimum, the head should be elevated at all times, including when the patient is asleep. There should be no bending over to lift things and sleeping with multiple pillows or a foam wedge. Cold compresses applied on the forehead can help reduce swelling but these should not be directly applied over the nose.
The revisionist surgeon will let the patient know when it's safe for him/her to resume regular exercise and other strenuous activities, which is typically within a few weeks after surgery. The nose and the rest of your face should be protected with sunscreen while going outside.
If you are a past rhinoplasty patient and are unhappy with the results from a previous surgery, it may be time to consider a revision rhinoplasty with Dr. George Pope. Schedule an appointment so that you can both discuss what went wrong in the past and how you can make sure that you get the results you desire in the future.

“There's minimal downtime.” “The pain will be moderate.” “ There is no swelling." Anyone who has fallen for those soothing words, only to wake up after a laser treatment with her face on fire and looking like a slab of beef carpaccio, knows how misleading recovery terminology can be. To help ease the confusion, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has come up with a lexicon of terms for doctors to use that they hope will help quantify for patients the downtime, bruising, redness, swelling, and pain associated with laser and light-based treatments.
Talking Downtime
No downtime: Means it will take more than your lunch hour but less than 24 hours to look like yourself.
Minimal: You can expect 24 to 72 hours of downtime.
Moderate: It will take three to seven days to recover.
Significant: You'll want to hide out for more than a week.
Talking Bruising
No bruising: Well, this one is not exactly true. There can be some pigment change, but it should fade fast and can easily be covered up with concealer.
Minimal bruising: The bruising will take a week to go away.
Moderate: Bruising will fade in one to two weeks.
Significant: It will take more than two weeks for the bruising to disappear. Buy some heavy duty makeup to wear in the meantime.
Talking Redness
None: Again, not exactly accurate. You may see some redness in the first 24 hours.
Minimal: You can expect one to three days of redness.
Moderate: Count on four to seven days of redness.
Significant: Don’t do this treatment the week before you're having your picture taken. It will take more than a week to look like yourself again.
Talking Swelling
Essentially none: Again, this means some. It will resolve in less than three days.
Minimal: You'll be puffy for three to seven days.
Moderate: This is not so moderate—eight to 14 days of swelling.
Significant: This is really significant swelling that takes more than two weeks to heal.
Talking Pain and Discomfort
Essentially none: This means you may need to take something like Tylenol for any pain you have.
Minimal: You may require a topical painkiller during treatment and a prescription painkiller after.
Moderate: Same as above, plus some local anesthesia before treatment.
Significant: You'll require some intravenous sedation or general anesthesia before treatment. (Translation: This treatment is going to hurt. You'll be knocked out.)

Patients seeking nose jobs must have a basic understanding of the rhinoplasty procedures and the impact they can have not only on the appearance of the nose but also the breathing pattern. Rhinoplasty may be cosmetic, functional or revisionist, depending on the purpose for which it is being performed.
One of the surgical approaches for rhinoplasty is the closed rhinoplasty in which all the incisions are made inside the nose so that there are no external scars. While some plastic surgeons feel that an open rhinoplasty provides more access to the nasal structures, a skilled surgeon will be able to use any of the procedures effectively. The advantages of closed rhinoplasty include less swelling after the surgery, less scarring, a shorter duration of the surgery and quick recovery period.
Open rhinoplasty is the technique for nasal surgery where the cartilage of the nose is exposed by peeling back the nasal skin. This is done with a small external incision on the columella – the part of the nose between two nostrils and additional incisions are made inside the nose. While performing a rhinoplasty through an open approach, the surgeon can look directly at the lower one-third to one-half of the nose. The nasal skeleton of the lower nose and tip is made up by cartilage, which is the part that the plastic surgeon has to primarily work on. Reshaping of the upper nose is not significantly different between the two rhinoplasty approaches – the open and closed techniques. Once the cartilage is exposed, they are modified by reducing, reshaping, suturing, and supporting them. Almost always in open rhinoplasty, “grafts” are placed to ensure maintenance of the desired structure.
Closed and open approaches are used for cosmetic, functional and revisionist rhinoplasties as per the severity of the problem and the aim of the surgery. Nose job surgeries are usually performed under general anesthesia to cause no disturbance to patient. The recovery period after an open rhinoplasty is longer than closed rhinoplasty. The medication prescribed by the surgeon should be taken to reduce discomfort and swelling.

A revision or secondary rhinoplasty surgery is undergone by those who may not be happy with the cosmetic result of their initial rhinoplasty or nose job.
Before opting for a revision rhinoplasty, all the details including possible risks or complications must be discussed with the surgeon. A revision rhinoplasty must be performed by an experienced surgeon who has profound understanding of the nasal structure and surgical techniques.
Dr. Pope is actually considered one of the area's most renowned nasal plastic surgeons. In fact, many doctors often refer their rhinoplasty patients to him during difficult cases or when performing rhinoplasty work on family members.
The procedure for a revision rhinoplasty depends on the deformities or breathing problem caused by the previous surgery. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia (the total duration may be up to 3 or 4 hours). The revisionist surgeon has to restore both structure and function. In few cases, the surgeon may have to recreate symmetry by adding back or removing a previously inserted cartilage. If required, extra cartilage can be taken from the nasal septum, ear, or ribs. Adding extra cartilage is often required to open the airway or to recreate the shape and proportion of nose.
The incisions for a revision rhinoplasty may be made on the inside of the nose for a closed rhinoplasty or on the underside, between the nostrils, in case of an open rhinoplasty. Closed rhinoplasty is usually less invasive to tissues as the surgeon only uncovers the areas that need correction. The open rhinoplasty involves a wider cut and more work on supporting structures. The closed approach is safe if the patient has scarring from the previous surgery but many plastic surgeons choose the open approach as it provides more exposure and helps to understand complicated cases in a better way.
Nasal packs may be used for 7-8 hours to reduce the swelling and bleeding after surgery. The patient, however, cannot breathe through the nose until the packing is removed and should stay in the hospital during that time. The surgeon prescribes painkillers to reduce the discomfort. During the recovery period, the nose must not be rubbed and adequate bed rest must be taken with the head elevated on a comfortable pillow. The patients can return to normal activity after 2 to 3 weeks. The results of the surgery become visible in 3 to 4 months, once the swelling subsides completely.
At Orlando Plastic Surgery Center, we have state-of- the-art facilities for all kinds of plastic surgery treatments. Dr. George Pope is a highly regarded plastic surgeon, certified by American Board of Plastic Surgery and has been practicing cosmetic surgery in Orlando for more than 20 years.

Cosmetic surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the correction of form and appearance of body organs. It has been known to provide life changing experiences to many people who may have suffered from physical deformities by birth or due to an accident. Problems such as drooping eyelids, over sized protruding ears or a poorly shaped nose may not necessarily cause any physical pain but can be a cause of self consciousness and in most cases even social ridicule. Cosmetic surgery doctors utilize advance medical techniques to correct such problems which goes a long way to improve the appearance of patients. Cosmetic surgery is also referred to as revisionist surgery and in some cases such as drooping eye lid correction, it has even helped to improve the function of eye muscles.

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear plastic surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to rectify the physical deformity of ears. The surgery is performed to reduce the size of large ears or pin back ears that protrude too far from the head. The procedure can greatly improve a person's appearance and self esteem.
Children with deformed ears may be subject to teasing and ridicule, while it may be a cause of self consciousness in many adults. But with a safe medical treatment like ear plastic surgery, this problem can be permanently resolved by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
To start with otoplasty procedure, the surgeon makes a small cut behind the ear to expose the cartilage. This cartilage is then reshaped and any excess skin is removed. If required, the ear is repositioned more closely to the head, and the cut is closed with permanent stitches or sutures. The duration of the surgery is between one to two hours. In most of the cases, the patients are discharged from the hospital on the same day.
There would be some bruising, accompanied by pain, swelling or throbbing of the ears for a few days. This can be controlled by painkillers prescribed by your surgeon. Indeed, patients may feel disappointed by the appearance of their swollen ears after regaining consciousness from anesthesia. However, this is only a temporary impact and the ears take their reformed shape and a more optimal size in a couple of days. Normal activities for both children and adults can be resumed after a week or two of recovery from the surgery. The patients must nevertheless take care to avoid any activities that could cause a damage to the ear, until it is fully healed.
Otoplasty does not impact the hearing of a person and has not shown to cause any hearing loss. A child may undergo the surgery after attaining the age of 4 years as the ears are fully developed by then.
Orlando Plastic Surgery Center has been providing excellent services for revisionist surgery including otoplasty, rhinoplasty, eye lid surgery, liposuction and breast augmentation surgeries for more than twenty years.

These days it seems that there are as many plastic surgeons as there are Starbucks in every shopping plaza. How are patients supposed to make educated decisions about their bodies when the market is flooded with so many options?
Look to your right, and you’ll see billboards for “discounted breast surgeries”… look to your left and you’ll be convinced that getting your lips plumped for $99 is the steal of the century.
What’s a girl—or guy—to do? Simple… Make sure your doctor is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. This elite group of doctors are at the top of their game, and there’s no better choice for your body than a board-certified plastic surgeon from The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Why The American Board of Plastic Surgery? Why not another society or group?
“The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is one of the 24 specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). It is the only ABMS board which certifies in the full spectrum of the specialty of plastic surgery of the entire body—plastic and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, trunk and extremities.
By choosing a plastic surgeon who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc., you can be assured that the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and has completed at least five years of additional training as a resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
This includes a minimum of five years of residency training in all areas of surgery, including at least two years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Certification is a voluntary process a surgeon seeks after this training. To become certified, the doctor then must pass comprehensive written and oral exams.”

Sometimes the practice of plastic surgery doesn’t always get the respect it deserves. What many people don’t realize is that plastic surgery is much more than boob jobs and rhinoplasty work. Plastic surgery also helps thousands of Americans recover from serious injuries that result in disfigurement.
Reconstructive surgery is performed by qualified plastic surgeons on patients who have been badly scarred by traumatic events like fires, car accidents, or violent attacks.
Take for example the recent news of model Katie Piper. In 2008, she was attacked and brutally beaten by a stranger, leaving massive scarring damage to her face. As a professional model, this was the face that paid her bills. Think of it as an artist losing their hands—no more painting, no more income. The same for Katie Piper—scarred face, no paycheck.
Thanks to the efforts of plastic surgeons, Katie underwent several reconstructive surgeries to get her face free of the severe scarring from her attack. Now in 2011, she is free from her scars and back to being a fashion model in high demand. ??

As Piper exemplifies, patients who have suffered an accident that left them with a facial disfigurement often have to deal with much more than physical scars. Katie has taken her tragic incident and started a foundation with the help of her plastic surgeon and star producer, Simon Cowell, to create a dedicated burn and scar rehabilitation center in the UK.
So next time you think about plastic surgery, understand that it’s much more than a superficial practice. Plastic surgery allows people to get back to living after traumatic, disfiguring events that have invaded their lives. ??

As stated in a previous blog post this month, cosmetic procedures jumped 5% in 2010 compared to 2009. With this big increase in plastic surgery procedures comes more news of plastic surgery jobs that don’t live up to patients’ expectations. Most of the time, these botched jobs can be blamed on plastic surgeons who are either inexperienced in a certain procedure or not board-certified by industry organizations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or The American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Pope is finding that many patients are seeking him out for revisionist surgery—corrective surgeries that were previous performed by another doctor that did not provide the end results the patient desired.
At Orlando Plastic Surgery Center, we always stress how important it is to choose a plastic surgeon wisely. Do your research. Talk to previous patients. Look up your doctor and make sure that he or she is certified by an accredited board. And also remember, any licensed physician can call themselves a plastic surgeon. For example, a doctor may be certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties, but not the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
We understand how frustrating it can be for patients to undergo a second or even third procedure for revisionist surgery. Rest assured—you are in good hands with Dr. Pope and his qualified staff.
Dr. Pope has been performing revisionist surgeries for over 20 years, and he has consistently been endorsed by not only previous patients and area magazines like Orlando Magazine (Voted “Orlando’s Best Plastic Surgeon” two years in a row), but also by his contemporaries.
In fact, many plastic surgeons and other medical professionals in Orlando often refer their patients (or their own family members) to Dr. Pope because of his vast experience in this field of rhinoplasty work (nose jobs and nasal reconstruction). For patients who underwent previous nose jobs and were not happy with the results, Dr. Pope may be the revisionist surgeon you’ve been searching for. Other areas of Dr. Pope’s expertise in revisionist surgery are in breast augmentations for women and gynecomastia procedures for men.
*Dr. George Pope is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPC). The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. Representing more than 7,000 physician members, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
