Avoiding Risks Associated With Ear Plastic Surgery for Children
January 9th, 2012  Posted By admin   Posted in Otoplasty | No Comments »

Children with protruding or poorly shaped ears may develop a poor self esteem or aggressive behavior if they become the subject of ridicule by peers. But ear plastic surgery or otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure that helps anyone including children to get ears that really suit the anatomy of their face.

For cosmetic surgery in Orlando, people should always consult board certified surgeons because of their ability to provide a safe and effective treatments that bring good aesthetic results and does not cause any other complications. If you are considering an ear plastic surgery for your child in Orlando, it is wise to know the complications that can result when the post operative medical advice is not followed properly or when the surgeon is not experienced in plastic surgery (in which you should avoid and trust only an experienced otoplasty surgeon).

Children who undergo ear plastic surgery are typically at high risk for certain complications when they have difficulty adhering to postoperative instructions such as refraining from rough play or contact sports. Such activities can cause surgical sutures to loosen, which may in turn cause the ears to return to their original shape. Parents need to ensure that their children comply with the surgeon’s instructions.

The positive aspect of ear plastic surgery is that this treatment is often extremely successful on children between the ages of 6 and 10 as their ear cartilage is quite pliable. Just take a look at some of our otoplasty before and after photos to see Dr. Pope's life-changing work.

Some of the risks of ear plastic surgery include infection, excessive bleeding, anesthesia complications, scarring and poor wound healing. However, such risks can be avoided when you choose an experienced, board-certified surgeon. A good surgeon uses the most effective plastic surgery procedures so that there are no visible scars after the surgery. An experienced surgeon also ensures that patients do not get impacted by infection or post surgery bleeding and recovers in least possible time from the surgery. For this the surgeon may recommend wearing a protective bandage for 10 to 14 days. The patient must avoid wearing shirts that have to be pulled over the head – a button up or zip-up shirt is safer during the recovery period.

Dr. George H Pope, MD, FACS is a well known plastic surgeon certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is also a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. With experience of over 20 years in ear plastic surgery, Dr. Pope uses the safest procedures for different treatments to ensure the most effective results for his patients. Orlando Plastic Surgery Blog – Ear Plastic Surgery Can Treat Inherited Ear Deformities
December 5th, 2011  Posted By admin   Posted in Ear Plastic Surgery, Otoplasty, Uncategorized | No Comments »

Ear deformities are typically inherited. In fact, it has been observed that 59 percent of affected individuals have a family history of protruding or prominent ears.

An ear looks prominent or deformed primarily due to two reasons:

  • Underdevelopment of the antihelix
  • Overdevelopment of the concha

If the ear lacks a proper antihelix, the outer edge of the ear does not fold in toward the head, and sticks out instead. Also, if the concha is enlarged, the ear sticks out farther from the head than what is deemed normal. Such deformities can be noted in a child untill he/she reaches the age of 5 or 6 as human ears become fully mature by this age.

If a child is impacted by an ear deformity, an otoplasty or ear plastic surgery is advised to treat the problem in its earliest stage. Cosmetic deformities can result in severe emotional and behavioral problems. Self consciousness and ridicule by peers can be very disturbing for the child as also his/her parents. This is why ear plastic surgery is suggested at the age of 5 or 6. It is the safest cosmetic surgery for a child and board certified surgeons use best plastic surgery procedures for an effective treatment of deformed ears.

It must be mentioned that ear plastic surgery is done purely for cosmetic reasons and does not impact the hearing power of ears. It is not a treatment for hearing impairment. The parents of affected children should discuss all their expectations from the surgery with their board-certified plastic surgeon for cosmetic surgery in Orlando.

An otoplasty can also be performed on adults under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. However a young child undergoing any cosmetic surgery needs to be given a safe dose of general anesthesia as kids are unlikely to remain still during a medical treatment.

The surgery is started by making an incision behind the ear. The cartilage is reshaped with sutures to hold the reformed shape and sometimes a piece of cartilage may be removed. Ears are positioned closer to head and sutures are used to close the incision. A dressing is placed over the ears. The child may feel some pain after recovering from anesthesia, but safe painkillers are prescribed by the surgeon. Recovery from otoplasty takes 10-15 days and results are shapely and cosmetically superior looking ears.

Orlando Otoplasty — What You Need to Know About Ear Plastic Surgery
November 11th, 2011  Posted By admin   Posted in Otoplasty | No Comments »

Plastic surgery has given life changing experiences to people who suffered from lack of confidence or poor self esteem due to problems with their physical appearance. Facial plastic surgery in Orlando by a good cosmetic surgeon can effectively treat and improve the look of a mis-shaped nose, droopy eye lids, sagging skin, wrinkled eye borrows and even poorly shaped ears. Ear plastic surgery, also referred to as otoplasty takes many forms – from bringing ears that stick out too far closer to the head (ear pinning), to reducing the size of very large ears, and reshaping various bends in the cartilage – ear plastic surgery has effective cosmetic solutions for both men and women. It can also be safely used to correct the shape of ears in young children, before deformed ears become a source of embarrassment or low self esteem in them.

For a safe treatment that yields best cosmetic results, ear plastic surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. In adults, the surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure and may be performed under local anesthesia and sedatives. For young children, general anesthesia is necessary to keep them calm and still during the procedure. All incisions for such surgeries are made behind the ear so there are no visible scars after the treatment. If the ears are protruding, they can be repositioned a little backward. If some of the natural folds of the ear are missing, the same can be created through tissues taken from other parts of the ear or body. Ears that have been injured and are thickened can be thinned and sculpted in an ear plastic surgery. At the end of the operation, a pressure dressing is placed over the ears to hold it in place while they heal.

There is a little pain and bruising after the surgery as the patient recovers from anesthesia. It takes about a week and a half after the surgery for most of the swelling to subside, although the treated area remains sensitive for about three weeks.

With better looking ears proportionate to facial structure, the person naturally feels more confident.

Recovering from Ear Plastic Surgery, Also Known as Otoplasty
September 23rd, 2011  Posted By admin   Posted in Otoplasty | No Comments »

An ear plastic surgery or otoplasty aims to rectify the deformities of ears. If you are considering this cosmetic surgery in Orlando, you should trust the procedure to only an experienced board-certified surgeon who is knowledgeable in otoplasty surgeries.

Ear plastic surgery involves the reshaping and repositioning of ears. It is also one of the safest plastic surgery procedures for young children. The ears reach their fully mature size at the age of 5 or 6 and deformities if any can be corrected before they become a source of embarrassment for the child during his or her pre-teen or teenage years. Ear plastic surgery does not impact the hearing potential of a person. It is only a correction of the external shape and/or size of ears for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons.

Here is one of Dr. Pope's otoplasty patients… a before and after photo of this young man's back view. More otoplasty before and after photos can be found in our Before and After Gallery under Otoplasty.

An otoplasty surgery takes about 2 hours and can be performed on local as well as general anesthesia. The period of recovery from the surgery depends on the kind of corrections made and the plastic surgery procedures used. After the surgery the ears and head of the patient are covered with bandages for healing of tissues. As the effect of anesthesia and local sedatives reduces after the surgery, there is some pain, discomfort and a sensation of throbbing in the ears. The painkilling medications prescribed by the plastic surgeon will help to reduce such pain. The patient should try to sleep on his/her back instead of leaning sideways as this can put pressure on the ear and impact the treatment.

Two or three days after the ear plastic surgery, the dressing may have to be changed. This happens when the patient visits his/her surgeon for the post surgery check-up. The bandages are replaced by a broad head-band that gently covers the ears. External surgical sutures are generally dissolvable and do not leave any visible post-surgery marks on or around the ear.

The swelling subsides in about 10-15 days after the ear plastic surgery and the visible results of surgery also become obvious in this period. With better looking ears proportionate to facial structure, the person feels more confident.

Revision Otoplasty for More Beautiful Ears
August 19th, 2011  Posted By admin   Posted in Otoplasty | No Comments »

Ear plastic surgery or otoplasty is not simple. Understanding the beauty of the ear, its deformities and deciding what should be the right techniques for correction is an art. It is advisable to consult an experienced board certified surgeon if you opt for an ear plastic surgery. However if you have already had an otoplasty and are not quite happy with the outcome, a skilled board certified surgeon can still help you to get the results that you seek.

With the right plastic surgery plastic procedures, an otoplasty surgeon can reshape and resize your ears for a better appearance. Ideally a patient going for revision ear plastic surgery should also show to the doctor few pictures for the look of the ears prior to the initial surgery. This helps the doctor to compare the pre and post-surgery looks and get a better idea of the patient’s expectations.

It should also be remembered that scars after any plastic surgery can take up to 6 months to heal so there should be some time gap between your previous and revision ear plastic surgery. Altered anatomy and internal scars can interfere with the plastic surgery procedures for a revision otoplasty.

Contracted antihelical fold is a complication due to excessive bending of the antihelix. This problem is noticed when the fold of the ear is over bent to compensate for a projecting concha. The contracted antihelix may also result from a plan to bring the ears too close to the head and from the inadequate healing nature of the cartilage. Through revision otoplasty a board certified surgeon can unbend the cartilage and correct the elements that were not properly addressed.

If your problem was enlarged ears and this could not be corrected by bringing the ears closer to the head, during a revision ear plastic surgery, the cosmetic surgeon can address the issue through a reduction otoplasty.

An ear deformity can also cause both the top and bottom of the ear to protrude. Revision otoplasty can help to sculpt the elements in a better alignment.

Ear Plastic Surgery – Otoplasty – Explained.
July 3rd, 2011  Posted By admin   Posted in Otoplasty | No Comments »

Otoplasty or ear plastic surgery is used as a cosmetic procedure to correct the deformities of ear. It can help through reshaping and repositioning of ears and is also one of the safest plastic surgery procedures for children. In fact, deformities in ear should be corrected at the earliest stage. Protruding ears can also be pinned back closer to the head with ear plastic surgery.

The average duration for an ear plastic surgery is 1 to 2 hours as per the corrections required. The surgery can be performed under local anesthesia with sedatives but general anesthesia may be used for very young children.

There are different techniques for an ear plastic surgery and a board certified surgeon tailors the procedures as per the individual patient’s needs. These may include:

  • Sculpting or rearranging an existing cartilage in the ear.
  • Adjusting the position of ear lobe to the position of the head.
  • Rearranging or adding skin to the ear structure.
  • Adding cartilage through grafts from another part of the body.

To begin the ear plastic surgery, the surgeon begins with an incision just behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear joins the head. The cosmetic surgeon may use cartilage cutting or cartilage sparing to correct the size and shape of ear. In cartilage sparing, multiple suspension sutures are placed through the cartilage. The helix and anti helix folds are created and the ears are pinned back. This technique eliminates the possibility of visible scars around the ear but is technically more challenging and is generally used by experienced board certified surgeon.

The protrusion of the lobules is also addressed during the surgery, if required. After reshaping and repositioning the ear cartilages, the excess skin folds behind the ears are removed and surgical sutures are used to close the cuts. A large dressing is used to provide protection to the ear sculpting. The patient may experience a little soreness, aching or throbbing but that can be subsided using painkillers prescribed by the surgeon.

Generally, dissolvable sutures are used for ear plastic surgery and these do need to be removed. The patient must take some rest for at least a week after the surgery and vigorous activities that can hurt the ear should be avoided.

At Orlando Plastic Surgery Center we have state-of–the-art facilities for the comfort of all patients, and we provide the most effective cosmetic surgery treatments. Dr. George Pope is a board certified surgeon with more than 20 years of experience in plastic surgery. He has helped numerous men and women gain more confidence in their appearance.

More On Otoplasty (Ear Plastic Surgery)
April 21st, 2011  Posted By Dr. Pope   Posted in Cosmetic Procedures, Otoplasty, Reconstructive Surgery, Revisionist Surgery, Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear plastic surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure to rectify the physical deformity of ears. The surgery is performed to reduce the size of large ears or pin back ears that protrude too far from the head. The procedure can greatly improve a person's appearance and self esteem.

Children with deformed ears may be subject to teasing and ridicule, while it may be a cause of self consciousness in many adults. But with a safe medical treatment like ear plastic surgery, this problem can be permanently resolved by a board-certified plastic surgeon.

To start with otoplasty procedure, the surgeon makes a small cut behind the ear to expose the cartilage. This cartilage is then reshaped and any excess skin is removed. If required, the ear is repositioned more closely to the head, and the cut is closed with permanent stitches or sutures. The duration of the surgery is between one to two hours. In most of the cases, the patients are discharged from the hospital on the same day.

There would be some bruising, accompanied by pain, swelling or throbbing of the ears for a few days. This can be controlled by painkillers prescribed by your surgeon. Indeed, patients may feel disappointed by the appearance of their swollen ears after regaining consciousness from anesthesia. However, this is only a temporary impact and the ears take their reformed shape and a more optimal size in a couple of days. Normal activities for both children and adults can be resumed after a week or  two of recovery from the surgery. The patients must nevertheless take care to avoid any activities that could cause a damage to the ear, until it is fully healed.

Otoplasty does not impact the hearing of a person and has not shown to cause any hearing loss. A child may undergo the surgery after attaining the age of 4 years as the ears are fully developed by then.

Orlando Plastic Surgery Center has been providing excellent services for revisionist surgery including otoplasty, rhinoplasty, eye lid surgery, liposuction and breast augmentation surgeries for more than twenty years.
