Cosmetic Surgery Blog: Breast Lift Surgery 101

Appearance is very important for most women.  Much attention is given to enhance and maintain their appearance. However, due to age and gravity, the breasts tend to lose its youthful qualities. An important part of the woman’s anatomy that greatly suffers as they age is her bust. Because of several factors like: pregnancy, lactation and weight loss, the breasts can lose their firmness and shape. The breasts appear deflated and sagging; this is because of a discrepancy between the volume of breast tissue and the excess of the breast’s skin envelope.

To correct this dissatisfying outcome, a surgical procedure can be done. Breast lift or Mastopexy is designed to delay or reverse the negative effects of age and gravity. The areola that tends to widen during lactation may also be reduced through the procedure. The breast may also be augmented by placing implants to achieve a fuller and firmer appearance. To best complement the breast  procedures for a more satisfying result, an abdominoplasty along with a liposuction may also be recommended.

You may be a breast lift candidate if you:

  • Have gone through pregnancy and nursing and don't plan on having more children
  • Have stretched skin resulting to decrease in breast tissue volume
  • Have episodes of weight loss and weight gain as this may cause the breasts to droop
  • Have excess breast skin envelope and less breast tissue volume
  • Have poor skin elasticity causing the breasts to hang loosely

Upon consultation, the surgeon will conduct a thorough examination and complete assessment of your medical history and breast condition. Breast lift is ideal when there is no existing breast deformity or disease. The procedure does not interfere in breast feeding in future pregnancies.

The procedure requires a mammogram 6 months prior to surgery. The surgeon will then take photos of your breast and compare it to photos of reference provided by the surgeon to help decide in the expected appearance and quality of the breast. The surgery uses a general anesthesia in an outpatient facility. It takes 2-3 hours to finish the procedure. Incisions are made in inconspicuous and not readily noticeable areas of the chest area.

The incision is commonly made along the natural skin fold of the breast. Excess skin is then removed and the nipple is repositioned on the breast mound. To reshape the breast, the skin surrounding the areola and lower breast are brought together.

Layers of sutures are hidden and the final incisions are covered with the use of a surgical tape. Small suction drains are often placed to prevent accumulation of fluids. 2-5 days after surgery, the drains will be removed. The stitches will be removed 1-2 weeks after, and then a special suturing technique will be done to make sure the incisions fade.

You will have a soft bra or wrapping placed 1-2 days after surgery to support the breast and promote healing. The breasts are expected to bruise and be swollen with some discomfort for 48 hours. Loss of normal sensation may be felt due to the swelling, but sensation will come back usually in 3-6 months time. Non-strenuous activities may be resumed in less than a week.  Strenuous activities should be avoided for 3-4 weeks.

Complications for Mastopexy are uncommon. Potential risks are bleeding, infection and anesthesia reactions. A succeeding procedure may be performed in cases when wounds have healed poorly. Complications will be lessened by closely adhering to surgeon’s preoperative and postoperative instructions.
